Job Description
The Safety Manager will set the tone for company-wide safety and risk management, while demonstrating strong leadership skills and thriving in a team environment.
We’re looking for you to do the following:
- Preconstruction Planning – Work with the JB Project Teams to develop pre-construction job hazard analysis and site-specific safety plans.
- Training – Overall responsibility for new hire, task specific, post incident, and annual training requirements.
- JBCC Safety and Health Program - Ensure that company Safety and Health policies are in place, updated annually, trained on, and enforced.
- Safety Audits - Ensure all JB field personnel and subcontractors are audited at least monthly and are following OSHA, ANSI and JBCC safety guidelines.
- Incident Investigations – Overall responsibility for ensuring all incidents are investigated thoroughly. This includes determining a root cause and corrective action for every safety incident.
- Claim Management – Communicate with VP to determine when to open a claim, provide quarterly updates on the status of claims to the VP, and provide incident documentation to the insurance company/legal team.
- Drug & Alcohol Testing Program – Responsible for maintaining a DOT approved drug and alcohol testing program.
- Budget Management – Responsible for creating an approved annual safety budget and providing monthly updates to the VP.
- OSHA Recordkeeping – Complete and maintain integrity of OSHA injury (300/300A) logs throughout the year and submit annually.
- Meetings:
- Weekly Meetings
- Business Operations Tactical (Attend) – provide VP with plan for week and update on projects/goals
- Safety Department Tactical (Host) – get update from safety team on plan(s) for the week and update on projects/goals
- Weekly Job Meetings (Attend/Plan) – ensure someone from the safety department is in attendance. Periodically attend for project updates.
- Monthly Meetings
- Executive Safety Meeting (Host) – provide JB executive team with an update on the incidents from the previous month and JB YTD safety numbers.
- Internal Safety Department Meeting (Host) – provide VP update on safety dashboard.
- Construction Manager Safety Meeting (Host) – review of the months incidents, trends, and safety goals with the field leadership team.
- Monthly Field Training Meeting (Host) – Review incidents & lessons learned with field crews. Provide monthly safety training related to lessons learned, trends, or compliance requirements.
- Annual Meetings
- Annual Safety Training (Plan/Host) – 8-hour day when the entire company is shut down for safety training. The Safety Manager is responsible for planning relevant training for all JB personnel.
- Safety Week (Plan/Host) – Plan a full week of safety events and coordinate with JB executive team to ensure participation.
- Additional Meetings
- Monthly PM staff meeting upon request from meeting host
- Committee meetings upon invitation from committee chair
Key Performance Indicators:
- Incident Frequency – At Fault Safety Incidents per Labor Hour
- OSHA Recordable Rate
- Insurance Claim Frequency – Annual number of incidents that become insurance claims
- Training Hours per Employee – Field Personnel & Safety Staff
- Safety Audits – Monthly Total & Foreman audited per month
- Job Meeting Attendance – Percentage of Job Meetings Safety Personnel attend
You Have:
- Experience - Minimum 10 years’ experience working in a safety role in a construction environment.
- Education & Certifications – Four Year Degree in Safety, Construction Management or Engineering. Board of Certified Safety Professionals credentials preferred.
- Public Speaking - Ability to communicate clearly in front of large groups.
- Computer Skills – PowerPoint, Excel, and Word proficiency. Experience with HCSS Safety preferred.
